Socially Conscious Business: Values and The Greater Good

Making the world a better place starts from within. the more we identify our values and higher purpose, clearing the blocks, the greater the impact. The more our work comes truly from a good place in our heart, the more we are effective in creating meaningful and purposeful actions that promote healthy change.

 

One place where this is beginning to take an effect is in socially conscious business. Christine Arena, a business consultant and author of The High-Purpose Company, says more businesses are finding that social responsibility is more than feel good philanthropy and a good public image, but as a long term practice. Today many companies such as General Electric, Toyota, and Wegmans Food markets, are staking their business growth and future on environmental and social business goals.

 

But does this make a difference in the bottom line? The most sweeping research on the topic, Marc Orlitzky, Sara Rynes, and Frank Schmidt looked at 52 studies covering 34,000 companies world wide over a 30 year period.  Their 2004 study found that well-run, profitable businesses also

boasted strong social and environmental records, and vise versa.  Firms that rewarded employees with good work climates and higher pay and benefits saw stronger sales, and stock prices, plus less employee turnover. 

 

Rynes says, "As a company becomes more socially responsible, its reputation and financial performance go up, which causes them to become even more socially responsible.

The more we come from values and the greater good, More than profit alone, the better for the environment and people worldwide. Now isn't that attractive?

Happiness - Is Prosperity the Key?

Is continual economic growth the key to wellbeing?  Blogger, Tony Wellington, in his post, Prosperity May Not Be Happiness Key, says No.  Indeed he suggests that negative events, such as the Great Depression, and even the 911 terrorist attack, DID NOT lead to a downturn in mood, but rather to an increased sense of well being. People had to unify and struggle together which gave their life meaning. We are happier, he says, when we unite around a sense of purpose.

People bond with each other at times of threat.  This bonding, he argues, is the stuff of happiness.  In other words, once basic needs are met, relationships and a sense of community are a greater source of happiness and well-being than is money alone. It is not just money or social bonding that makes for greater happiness, it is both.   

Indeed research has shown that families of wealth are more likely to maintain their wealth, when they provide community service.  My very favorite example of this kind of business is "Newman's Own," developed by the late Paul Newman.  All profits go to charity.  He has funded numerous camps for children suffering from terminal illness.  As his business continues to expand, his legacy continues to grow. He has triggered our social conscious. Research shows that consumers are more likely to spend money on businesses that have a charitable outreach than a business that focuses on profit alone. 

Negative events, such as the downturn in our economy, do not need to be a threat. Instead, they can be a stimulus for growth. We can empower ourselves and gather our resources to develop business structures that better meet the needs of all.   Rather than one or the other, it can be both.  Now, isn't this much more attractive?

Happinesss: When More is Less

Often people participate in workshops for personal growth.  I attended a 3-Day seminar last weekend and was delighted to see that many of the speakers were concerned about the economy.  There were many opportunities social networking as well as for obtaining new information. 

As is common in American Society, I found myself facing the choice of choosing to purchase additional information and products or to be satisfied with applying the information I already have.  I chose the latter.  Actually, the social networking was of the greatest benefit to me.

One prevalent belief in Western societies has been that the more information, the more technology, and the more choice that we have, the happier we will be.  All to often, however, many have discovered that while initially attractive, it may not lead to the happiness that was anticipated.  Indeed, research shows that too much choice can even lead to indecision and depression. It is often
based on the unconscious belief, "we are not enough."

Barry Schwartz, in his book, The Paradox of Choice: Why More is Less, cites research showing that when customers were given many choices, they were much less likely to take action.  For example, customers were more likely to pass a display of 30 items than a display of six. Add to this, the findings that once basic needs are met, material items are no longer the greatest source of happiness.  People are more likely to experience happiness from their bonding and close relationships.

From this point of view, the challenges facing our economy may actually be a benefit. We are
all in this together, and by maximizing our our strengths, just as we are, may become happier.

Becoming Resilient

Have you found that listening to the news leaves you fearful and depressed? Does it leave you feeling unsettled, doubting your abilities, and the future? When times are tough, some businesses and relationships fail, while others take it as a challenge and continue to flourish and thrive.

What makes the difference? Some people are resilient. They can handle adversity well and use it to expand their options. Others often become overwhelmed with fear. When you are in fear, it limits your options.

Would you like to be more resilient? Here are three tips:

 1. Look at the big picture. People who are resilient honor their strengths and remain positive. When you honor your higher intentions and strengths, you become more aligned with your spiritual resources. Then you are not as reactive to the immediate circumstances.

2. Look at the facts rather than shame or blame. If a problem arises, it may not be your fault. Research shows that those who see adverse events as resulting from a number factors and not blame themselves or others are more likely to see the adversity as temporary. This makes it easier to take action.

3. Discover your sources of community. We are all in this together. The combined concerted action of a small group in pursuing a common goal is empowering, even if it results from only the support of one person. A shared focus on using individual strengths in the service of the common good brings great personal gratification for everyone involved. It gives you the support and faith for finding a solution to the problem.

Everyone has strengths. Discovering these strengths helps you to stay on a more resilient track. By taking a broader perspective you may even be able to transform an adverse event into a learning experience that you can share with others.
